Eisteddfod 2018 in Cardiff

Every year thousands of people come together to celebrate the national Eisteddfod, with the 2018 festivities being held in Cardiff for the first time in a decade. The event is generally considered to be “the pinnacle of the Welsh cultural calendar”, (not bad considering it’s been going since the 12th century) and celebrates literature, music, performance and visual arts. Not to mention a huge concert programme of events.

When Cardiff hosted the Eisteddfod back in 2008, the Principality Stadium was called the Millennium Stadium, the St David’s Shopping Centre was still under construction and The Coal Exchange was a derelict building waiting to be reimagined as the Exchange Hotel. Since then the city has undergone extensive redevelopment, with Cardiff adapting to modern demands and positioning itself as a leading European city.

Similarly, the Eisteddfod has undergone a transformation of its own. This year it’s breaking away from the traditional and aiming to be more inclusive and welcoming to all. The biggest difference this year is the location, the festivities will branch out from countryside settings and open themselves up to urban Cardiff Bay, Europe’s largest water-front development. And the campsite will be located in Pontcanna Fields in the city centre.

Fortunately, Cardiff is a compact city and can be easily explored on foot. The city centre is a 30 minute walk from Cardiff Bay (Pro tip, you can jump in a water-taxi from Bute Park to Mermaid Cardiff Bay for a cheaper fare than a regular taxi).

Whilst Cardiff Bay can certainly hold its own and is no stranger to large-scale events. It hosted the ambitious Champions Festival during the UEFA Champions League Final back in June 2017 and is set to host the Race Village during the Cardiff stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race in May 2018.

Cardiff is the largest media centre outside of London and seeing as Orchard is a business which works across various media platforms we’re proud to call it home. One of our particular areas of expertise is Events Management and Exhibitions, which makes us an expert in all things Maes. ‘The Maes’ is the name of the traditional Eisteddfod site and covers all things from the music stage to the food village and up to 250 stands.

But what makes a good exhibition stand? Well, it’s a real balancing act, with your ambitions at one end of the scale and your budget at the other. First impressions are everything, so creativity is key. But you also need to equip your sales team with the practical elements in order to get those all-important leads. Whatever the size of your space, it needs to be structured and you need to get the best value for your money. The Orchard Exhibitions team can help you balance this with both a full exhibitions experience and event management service.

We have worked with clients such as Dwr Cymru, who commissioned us to revamp their existing event container. The project was delivered within 4 weeks, from a complete repaint to match the client colours to bespoke 6m full-width wind out awning and a spacious new decking and exterior space. This gathered large crowds for Dwr Cymru at the Eisteddfod. We also gave technical support during the Eisteddfod which ensured that all logistics ran smoothly. We understand large scale events and we know how to make an impact.

Orchard Media and Events Group are ideally located in the city centre with easy reach of Cardiff Bay. We have a strong team of 60 creatives and every day we're dealing with a variety of Welsh clients. The majority of our work is produced bilingually and 40% of our staff are Welsh speaking, so the Welsh language is alive in our office – with a fluent Welsh speaker on each team.

We’re thrilled that this magnificent celebration of Welsh heritage is on our doorstep, so if you’re looking for creative ideas and inspiration to make the most of the Eisteddfod 2018 in Cardiff - Orchard can make them come to life.

The Eisteddfod will be held in Cardiff from 3-11 August and you can find out more information here.
