Get your Celtic on

Every year the French city of Lorient, Brittany, plays host to Festival Interceltique de Lorient; a ten-day festival to celebrate Celtic nations and it’s cultural traditions. Don’t have a clue what we’re on about? Orchard is off there again this year (we literally love it), and we’ve rounded up some of the festival’s most weird and interesting facts to get you up to speed with one of France’s most cultural festivals.

Over the course of 10 days, the festival brings in over 4500 musicians, singers, artists, academics and filmmakers (to name just a few), attracting over 750,000 visitors annually. That’s a lot of hotel beds to be slept in, food to be consumed and mileage travelled. Pretty impressive, right?!

As well as the festival usuals (live music, great food, and mingling with other festival-goers), there’s so much more you can do here. From dancing, painting, sports, and competitions (including that of the bagpipe variety – yes, genuine), the possibilities are endless – prepare to be surprised.

The Celtic nations are not limited to some of the traditional places as we know it, such as Wales, Scotland and Ireland. It also includes Argentina, Australia, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, and Spain. This is because the Celts were a strong, powerful network and spread far and wide. They made an imprint on more than just Europe, which is still acknowledged and celebrated today. So, if you visit Lorient for some #festivalvibes, don’t be shocked if you see some Aussies or Canadians, it’s the norm!

This year’s festival is the 48th edition, and also “The Year of Wales”. The graphic contains our glorious Welsh mountains and a Welsh harpist intertwined amongst our almighty Welsh dragon. Can you spot them?

The 'Bro gozh ma zadoù' is the official anthem for Brittany. Our own awesome national anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau was written to the same melody as the Bretagne. Both are still sung loud and proud, and we love that our national anthem is twinned with another Celtic region… Waaaaaales!

Orchard has worked at Festival Interceltique de Lorient for the past 10 years, supporting Wales and offering our services through production, stand building and events. We show visitor’s why Wales is awesome and love bringing something different to showcase each year. So what have we brought this year?

Ofelia, a four-piece indie-folk band from South Wales will be performing at the Wales Pavillion throughout the festival. We’re especially excited because our very own Orchard team member, Dan is one-fourth of Ofelia *major fangirl screams* and we couldn’t be prouder than to take such a talented bunch to Lorient with us. The band launch their 2nd EP on the 3rd Aug, and this will be the first of many live performances following the launch. We are a little biased, but they are truly awesome and should not be missed!

Ofelia, Wales Pavillion, 8 pm. Stick it in your diaries.
