For the 2010 Ryder Cup, Orchard produced, in partnership with WAG / Ryder Cup Wales, the opening Welcome to Wales Ryder Cup Celebration Concert at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. The gala event, which also included a dinner for 1,500 key stakeholders and sponsors prior to the concert, was televised on Sky and featured performances from Dame Shirley Bassey, Katherine Jenkins, Only Men Aloud and a host of other performers, as well as a special opening address from Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones and the introduction of the European and US Ryder Cup Teams. The event was also attended by HRH Prince Charles and First Minister Carwyn Jones.
Orchard coordinated the full production, artist booking and liaison, TV coverage and marketing for the event as well as managing the key stakeholder groups involved in the event. Welcome to Wales was the fourth televised event that Orchard has produced at the Millennium Stadium, following the Tsunami Relief Concert (2005/BBC2), and Wales Grand Slam Celebrations (2005 & 2008/S4C).
Orchard also worked closely with the Welsh Assembly Government Major Events Unit to create and produce two major high profile events linked to the 2010 Ryder Cup.
An Evening with the Welsh National Opera
This event, hosted by the Deputy First Minister for Wales attracted a VIP audience of 300 people, including the VVIP’s and a number of representatives of the European tour. Orchard provided the creative ideas to enhance an evening of Welsh National Opera performances, and a dinner on the stage of the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, with each table themed as an opera associated with WNO, and a set assembled to give diners the impression of being part of an opera performance.
A Night at the Castle
This event, hosted by the First Minister for Wales, attracted an audience of 400+ VVIPs, including 250 representatives from the European tour, to a spectacular evening in the grounds of Cardiff Castle, featuring a dinner, a range of performances from music to comedy, including performers, and a sound and light show featuring the projection of Welsh images on the Norman Keep of the castle.
For both events, Orchard handled everything from the creative design, production and distribution of invitations, programmes, tickets and all visuals used, to the content and presentation of the menus, to the site dressing and all staffing, to the sourcing and booking of performers, to registration and liaison with the European Tour, and finally to all aspects of production on the night.
