We produced a two-part anniversary special, The Impossible Show: Tsunami Relief Concert, to mark the 20th anniversary of Wales’ largest-ever fundraising concert.

The documentary, set to air on BBC Cymru Wales and BBC iPlayer, reveals the extraordinary behind-the-scenes journey of the event that raised over £1.25 million for victims of the Boxing Day tsunami.

On 22 January 2005, just three weeks after a devastating tsunami struck Indonesia, claiming over 230,000 lives, 66,000 fans gathered at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium (now Principality Stadium) for a star-studded charity concert. Featuring performances by Eric Clapton, Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Craig David, Katherine Jenkins and Snow Patrol, the event became the UK’s largest charity concert since Live Aid. Broadcast live by BBC and S4C, it placed Wales at the heart of a global relief effort.

The concert was a triumph against all odds. Organizers Paul Sergeant, Pablo Janczur, and Rupert Moon, working with a £50,000 budget and no initial lineup, wrote a plan on the back of a beer mat. Their efforts faced countless setbacks, nearly derailing the event before it was announced. Yet, through sheer determination, the team delivered a night that resonated worldwide.

The documentary Tsunami 2005: One Night in Cardiff recounts the gripping story of the concert’s creation through archival footage and interviews with performers and organizers, including Jools Holland, Feeder, Goldie Lookin Chain, Craig David and Katherine Jenkins. It is accompanied by Tsunami 2005: The Concert, an hour-long highlights program featuring unseen performances interwoven with behind-the-scenes insights.

The Tsunami 2005 specials are produced by Orchard for BBC Cymru Wales. The executive producer is Adrian Jones (Skin Deep, Pizza Boys), with Daisy Brown (Slammed) directing, Jack Carey producing, and Phil Chappell as director of photography.
